Today was the first day of classes and the opening of another school year on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Spirit and enthusiasm for one’s college of choice is never higher than that first day on campus for a college freshman or a recently matriculated junior college transfer.
The anticipation of what the new year will bring with making new friends, facing new challenges and the possibility of maybe joining a fraternity/sorority make this one of the most exciting times in a college student’s life. Unfortunately the prospect of going to a real college football tailgate and attending their first football game will be an experience forever lost on this year’s crop of incoming students at Cal State Fullerton.
Since starting this effort to Bring Back Titan Football, we have received numerous emails from incoming students asking why their university of choice does not play football. Many are bewildered when they find out that those visions they had of Saturday afternoons spent tailgating and rooting on the Titans will not be a reality in their first year at college. Sadly since 1993, the first fall semester the Titans did not play football, countless numbers of freshman and new student transfers did not get what I would like to call, “the complete college experience”.
Whether you are a football fan or not, you have to admit that not even having the opportunity to go to a football game of your own college leaves a hole in the college experience. With each incoming freshman class that is denied that opportunity, we run the risk of increased student apathy and a lack of pride in where they attend college. That’s why it is so important to continue this effort to Bring Back Titan Football.
